That’s showbiz! Secret audition tapes up for auction revealing the top Hollywood names including Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio who missed out on big film roles. Most directors would give their right arm to have Brad Pitt in their movie but for Ron Howard, one of Hollywood’s hottest men just did not have the right stuff to be in his film.
The famed director in fact said no not just to Brad but to Keanu Reeves and Robert Downey Jr. when he cast his firefighter film Backdraft, never publicly seen before audition tapes have revealed.
A treasure trove of footage will go under the hammer next week after three casting directors were convince by an auction house to sell 12 lots of videos, with 54 auditions in all, featuring Hollywood’s biggest names landing and loosing roles over the last 30 years.
Darren Julien and Martin Nolan of Julien’s Auction House revealed the fascinating footage on the Today this week.
Showing Brad’s audition it was clear the Mr and Mrs Smith actor was not entirely committed to the role as he struggled to remember the words.
And Brad was not the only one missing out on big roles – the part in Backdraft went to Billy Baldwin as he looked more believable as Kurt Russell’s brother.
Leonardo DiCaprio gave it his all but lost out on the role of ‘Pony Boy’ for the short lived television series The Outsiders.
Filmed in 1990, Leo’s good looks were already evident, but wearing his hair slicked back and the sleeves of his black T-shirt rolled up he still looked far younger than his 15 years.
The Great Gatsby star was passed over for the role – it was given to Mad Men’s Jay R. Ferguson – but he was given a small part in the pilot. It did turn out to be a blessing in disguise as the show was cancelled after just one season.
And the leading ladies also find themselves battling for the one role.
It seems everyone wanted to be play the dinosaur obsessed doctor in Jurassic Park.
While Laura Dern won the role both Gwyneth Paltrow and Helen Hunt tried out.
The auction house has 14 different audition tapes for the Jurassic Park movie that could sell for upwards of ,000.
‘A conservative estimate is 00 to 00 but it could be ,000 to ,000 you never know,’ Julien said.
‘We’ve never sold anything like this, so it’s hard to say.’
All the tapes are not of stars who failed to make the grade.
The auction house is also in position of the chemistry read between Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly for the Oscar winning film A Beautiful Mind.
Also showing off why they are one of Hollywood’s top actresses is Nicole Kidman, who wowed producers of the 1991 film Shattered with her powerful audition during which she breaks down and cries.
Nicole was offered the role based on her amazing audition but later turned it down.
The tapes will be auction off on April 5 and 6 in Beverly Hills, California, and no doubt there will be some mystery bidders trying to get hold of their own performances.
